'Exhausted, hungry, and scared': What it's like to be a journalist in Gaza

Coverage of the recent violent events in Gaza has led to allegations of media censorship and threats to journalists

After Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh was killed on Wednesday while covering the Israeli raids in the West Bank, the Palestinian Authority accused Israel of a “crime of execution,” and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) called for an independent investigation.

While the Israeli government alleges that she was killed by Palestinian gunmen, Abu Akleh was wearing a bulletproof vest marked “Press” at the time of the incident, and was shot in the head.

What's Next

Many are concerned about the safety of other journalists covering the conflict. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has also called for an investigation into the killing, and the incident has received international condemnation.

“We must do everything we can to protect journalists and to stop this madness,” Abbas stated.
