Google Fined €2.95bn by EU for Advertising Dominance

The European Union imposed a record-breaking fine of €2.95 billion on Google for abusing its advertising dominance.

The company has been accused of abusing its market position by the European Commission, which alleged that Google favored its own online display advertising technology over competing platforms. This behavior is alleged to have undermined competition and hurt both ad tech companies and advertisers.

Commissioner Margrethe Vestager Statement

The Commission's decision rests on the fact that Google's conduct denied consumers and competitors a meaningful choice for over a decade. It also denied advertisers a choice in ad tech providers, and website owners a choice in ad servers.

Google has since announced plans to appeal the decision, and the fine represents just a fraction of the company's overall revenue.
