Inside Donetsk as Residents Flee Attacks on Ukrainian Region Putin Wants to Control

Russian attacks on Donetsk continue to displace tens of thousands of residents as Putin attempts to capture the region.

The displacement of residents is increasing pressure on Ukrainian authorities to evacuate those who want to leave and increase humanitarian aid. Russian attacks over the past few weeks have resulted in tens of thousands of new evacuations, adding to the more than 2.6 million people who have already been displaced since the start of the war.

Resident Evacuation Efforts

With Russian attacks showing no signs of stopping, Ukrainian officials are working tirelessly to assist those evacuating. The country's Ministry of Internal Affairs has stated that nearly 220,000 people have left Ukraine via humanitarian corridors set up this week alone. Though efforts are being made to evacuate those who desire it, there are still significant challenges to leaving the region safely.

Humanitarian Efforts

As evacuation efforts continue, the need for humanitarian aid is rapidly increasing. The UN has estimated that around 70,000 people have arrived in Ukraine from Russia after fleeing persecution. Inside Ukraine, the situation is dire for those who have been displaced. Many have lost their homes and are in dire need of food, water, and other essential supplies.

Putin's Goals

With each attack, it is evident that Putin hopes to consolidate control over more Ukrainian territory. Donetsk is a crucial location for the Russian president, posing significant value agriculturally and economically. Capturing the Donbas region, which includes Donetsk, is a major strategic goal for Putin, as it would allow for a land bridge between Russia and the Crimean Peninsula.
