Trump demands homeless people 'immediately' move out of Washington DC

President Trump issued a controversial demand yesterday that the thousands of homeless people in Washington DC should be moved out of the district immediately.

Trump's comments, which came at a

press conference discussing infrastructure

, have been

widely condemned

, with many calling them

heartless

and

demeaning

towards a

vulnerable population.

The

DC Mayor, Muriel Bowser, responded

to the comments by saying that the city

has a comprehensive strategy to address homelessness

, and that they

'will not be deterred or distracted by presidential comments that are clearly meant to distract us from his failed leadership on infrastructure and other issues'

.

According to

data from the Washington DC Department of Human Services

, there are more than 17,000

people experiencing homelessness

in the district, with around 3,000 of those residing in

temporary shelters.
