Wife of South Korea's Jailed Ex-President Arrested
Bi-election faces uncertainty as Lee arrives at courthouse
South Korea's jailed ex-president Yoon Suk-yeol's wife, Choi Soon-sil, was arrested on Thursday over allegations of meddling in the country's recent presidential election. The bi-election candidate Lee Jae-myung's camp has requested the election be canceled, but the opposition argues the arrest was politically motivated and favors the election go ahead as planned. The president-elect has also called for a new election, saying the results cannot be viewed as fair or just. Choi Soon-sil has reportedly admitted to pressing for the dissolution of the presidential office in May, just two days before the election. Yoon Suk-yl's detention has been extended to September, with a formal indictment expected on charges of bribery and embezzlement. The president's conviction of bribery and embezzlement is expected next week.
